The Butts

Tom Wolstenholme design studio were commissioned to create a garden design for this grade ll listed building in the heart of Warwick. This project proved to be a challenge due to the Tree Preservation Order of a neighbouring Wild Cherry. We were advised that only 20% of the root system could be affected by the design and construction of any proposed plans. Unfortunately for us the root system covered over 60% of the garden.

Our approach to this scheme was to design a garden that was raised off the ground and supported at key points to protect the root system of the neighbouring Wild Cherry. Due to the incline of the site, we proposed a tiered system that would work with the sites topography. This welcomed a minimal dig approach conserving the ground which lay beneath. Hardwood decking platforms also allowed the penetration of rain water allowing free drainage, whilst the raised path, created from block and beam construction, provided a welcoming contrast between the hard landscaping materials.
